While the optimal Milo placement layout is unique to each home, there are a few things to keep in mind when placing your Milos in order to maximize speed and distance.
Wired Setup Configuration
If you are wiring Milo to your existing router via Ethernet cable, the first location is already decided for you — your Milo base unit must be placed wherever the Internet comes into your home. From there, you will want to space the Milo points up to 40 feet away from your base's location next to the router.
However, some users may have Ethernet wired throughout their homes. If this is the case, feel free to connect your Milo Base unit wherever you have wired access!
Wireless Setup Configuration
But what if you're connecting Milo wirelessly to your network? Where is the best place to locate the base and each point? Well, that also depends on where your Internet gateway is located:
- If your Internet comes in at a far end of your house, you're not alone - this is the case for many homes. In this situation, Milo will work best if you place the base and points in a "chain" or "bridge" formation, essentially forming a line across your living space. The last point should be on the opposite end of the house as your router, with another point in between the two.
- If your Internet comes in near the middle of your house, Milo works best when arranged in a "star" - one point on each side of the base, usually forming a triangular shape.
In any case, Milo has the power to figure out the optimal connection configuration on it's own, depending on where you place each unit. It will analyze where each unit in the system is placed, and make the best connection decisions for the system, whether that be:
Additional Placement Considerations
When placing your points, it is also worth considering the construction of your home — thick walls made of certain materials like brick, stone, and metal will give Milo a harder time getting its wifi signal to penetrate. Placing your Milo units closer to the walls or around corners connected to problem areas will help strengthen the network connection.
Also consider where you most want coverage: if you want to surf the web poolside, you should place a point nearby.
When in doubt, check Milo's green light - when it's on, you're in a good spot to maximize wifi!
